Sometimes nicknames are meant to be ironic. Tommy “Tiny” Lister is 6′5, very muscular and a former WWF wrestler. In the case of 23 year old Vanessa “No Heart” Maynard, her moniker couldn’t be anymore contradictory. Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy as an infant, she’s fought all her life and persevered as one of America’s most promising young designers. On the contrary, Vanessa’s all heart.

…on how she started designing
My cousin introduced me to graphic design at 13. I’ve always been artistic, but the world of design (particularly Photoshop) opened my eyes to possibilities I never knew I had. I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at 17 months old. I’m bound to wheelchair. Traditional art has always been difficult for me. Graphic design is all I have now.
…on music design
With music design, you have much more creative freedom as an artist. There’s always a story to be told, both from the music artists’ perspective and your own interpretation. Music and art have an interlocking relationship. I don’t think one could exist without the other. I take heavy responsibility in bringing the emotion of sound to a visual light. Other forms of design lack this particular intimate relationship.

…on commercial ad work
I am interested in commercial ad work; it would be a refreshing change of pace. I’m also very curious how strict the commercial world truly is. I’d like to know if or what my limitations are both as a conceptual and technical designer.
…on her biggest design influences
My favorite artists stem from the late 1920s through the current. I’ve always been fascinated with Man Ray & Andre Breton, and more recently Uda Barth and John Baldessari. I wish I could do a Baldessari like he does a Baldessari. Of course Paul Rand, Laurence Weiner & Stefan Sagmeister among print designers. For film, Saul Bass and Wes Anderson. There are numerous others.

…on where she’s most creative
I do my best work in the early morning in my “studio” aka bedroom. Ha. I’m sure after a few commercial ads I’ll be able to afford an actual studio.
…on what piece garnered her the most attention
“Money Powers Man” garnered the most attention for me, followed by my “Lust” series. Both were done around the same time. The most important thing I’ve learned from these works is providing a strong concept along with emotional ties to imagery & symbolism. It doesn’t work any other way.
…thank god she’s famous because
It’s the only thing I’m good at.
